The aim of our research is to understand and improve nano-sized heterogeneous photocatalysts for energy storage reactions (CO2 reduction, water splitting). For this purpose, transition metal oxide clusters on supports are synthesized, and their optoelectronic and catalytic properties are studied on the nanoscale, including the elementary surface processes relevant for catalysis. A high-purity gas-phase photoreactor with trace gas analysis allows studies of the product spectrum in photocatalytic CO2 reduction to the highest level of detail. Additionally, temperature-programmed studies (reduction, oxidation, probe molecule adsorption) and in-situ IR spectroscopy are applied for the characterization of the catalyst surface and the surface reactions.
