Heterogeneous reactions are core science and technology in chemical energy conversion. The size of application demands optimization of materials (oxides, metals, carbon) and processes on the basis of verified functional understanding. In order to meet this fundamental challenge we study synthesis and operation of catalysts for small molecule (O2, N2, CO2, H2O, lower alkanes) conversion and in particular the geometric and electronic structure of catalysts in operando. We design and operate advanced methods such as electron spectroscopy, electron microscopy, vibrational spectroscopy and chemical probe reactions.
