The "1st French/German Joint Symposium on Materials for Catalysis and Energy Applications" were held on October 10th-11th 2019 in Orsay/France.
This 2-day symposium was organized by the Paris-Sud University, the University of Paris-Saclay and the IMPRS RECHARGE.
Four main sessions were covered: (1) Molecular theory and spectroscopy in catalysis; (2) Synthesis, characterization and diagnostics; (3) photo/electrochemistry and (4) batteries.
There were four keynote lectures from leading experts: Prof. Sylvain Franger, Dr. Hynd Remita, Prof. Dr. Frank Neese and Prof. Dr. Christof Schulz.
Catalysis represents one of the fundamental tools to implement green chemistry concepts in real world applications. By providing alternative reaction pathways with lower activation energies, catalysts offer the prospect of highly selective processes with decreased energy demands, lower material consumption and less waste generated. The tailoring of catalyst materials for specific applications requires molecular understanding of the elementary steps within the desired reaction pathway.
The symposium aims to place approaches and insights from these different fields of catalysis into the common context of green and sustainable chemistry: In four days, concepts, techniques, and challenges of heterogeneous, homogeneous, and bio-catalysis will be discussed, from molecular spectroscopy to large scale applications.

April 26 - 28, 2018
Hotel Marienhof - Baumberge, Nottuln, Germany
From April 26-28 2018, the RECHARGE students went for their first retreat to Nottuln in the beautiful Münsterland. Thanks to the amazing team from Hotel Marienhof – Baumberge, we enjoyed three days of scientific discussion, including inspiring talks by Prof. Frank Neese and Prof. Christof Schulz. On walks and our bike to Burg Hülshoff we enjoyed nature in the German countryside. All together we reviewed the 1st IMPRS-RECHARGE Scientific Symposium, which had taken place in Duisburg in 2017, and planned the 2nd RECHARGE conference – which we are looking forward to in 2019!
